Aesthetics, functionality and sustainability: that's why porcelain stoneware is good for the planet

The themes of sustainability and respect for natural resources and the environment are increasingly at the centre of our daily lives, and influence in an increasingly significant way both the purchasing choices of consumers and those of companies, which are called to research and propose products on the market that are truly eco-friendly and sustainable.

The construction sector is called to take a central role in this research, and the use of an eco-sustainable material such as porcelain stoneware can be a concrete help to make our homes less and less impactful on the planet. Here's why.

A sustainable production process

From the production phase, porcelain stoneware is a particularly environmentally sustainable material, since producing stoneware tiles does not require indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, nor the use of polluting processes or the consumption of large amounts of water. If we compare the environmental impact of a marble quarry or other stones traditionally used for the construction of floors or coatings with that of a factory that produces porcelain stoneware tiles, the difference in terms of greater respect for nature immediately jumps to the eye. But the benefits, from an environmental point of view, are not limited to this: porcelain stoneware, in fact, contains a significant percentage of recycled material, and is therefore fully included among the products that respect the principles of the circular economy, according to which a careful use of environmental resources also passes through the recovery and reuse of raw materials.

Resistance and durability

Porcelain stoneware is a material characteriSed by great hardness, and is therefore able to withstand impacts, wear and the effect of atmospheric agents without deteriorating and without losing its beauty. A surface covered with porcelain stoneware tiles, therefore, is able to maintain its appearance over time, without requiring special maintenance or replacement of components. With a view to increasing sustainability from an environmental point of view, this aspect is decisive: choosing porcelain stoneware means being able to rely on a material that can resist over time, that is, on a material that will not have to be replaced in a short time with a new coating, with a consequent reduction in waste and pollution.

Energy efficiency and consumption reduction

Choosing to use porcelain stoneware for the flooring of your home also means limiting your energy consumption, since the characteristics of this material allow to reduce temperature changes inside the rooms, favouring the preservation of warmth during the winter, and coolness during the summer season. In addition, porcelain stoneware is a good heat conductor, and is therefore perfect for use in homes equipped with underfloor heating systems. A heating system of this type is much less impactful, in terms of energy, than a classic system equipped with radiators, because to operate it needs water at a temperature of only 30-35°C: porcelain stoneware, therefore, maximiSing heat transmission allows a concrete saving in energy terms, allowing to reduce consumption and make bills less expensive.

Wood-effect porcelain stoneware, marble effect and stone effect: aesthetics meets sustainability

Porcelain stoneware is an extremely versatile material, which can perfectly reproduce the appearance of natural materials such as wood or marble. This feature is essential to allow consumers to obtain an aesthetic effect that is completely comparable to what they could have using natural materials, without their choice having a negative impact on the environment. In short, the use of stoneware allows to take advantage of all the advantages of an eco-sustainable material, easy to maintain and quick to clean, without sacrificing the aesthetic effect guaranteed by the use of equally beautiful materials, but certainly more environmentally impactful.
