Gio Ponti - the ambassador of Made in Italy

Tagina is a sponsor of the "Gio Ponti. Ceramics 1922-1967" exhibition at MIC Faenza

The MIC – International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza – offers its visitors an exhibition dedicated to the figure and work of Gio Ponti, an Italian architect and designer who with his work has been instrumental to the development and promotion of Made in Italy in the world and to the spread of the modern language in design and architecture.

Tagina, whose DNA is strongly bonded with the territory and which has always put the reinterpretation of the historical and cultural heritage of our country at the centre of its collections, has chosen with confidence to support this project that collects, presents and enhances the work of one of the protagonists of twentieth-century ceramic design, underlining in particular its impact on the spread of Made in Italy worldwide.

The "Gio Ponti. Ceramiche 1922-1967” exhibition, curated by Stefania Cretella, can be visited until 13 October 2024 at the MIC headquarters and presents a complete overview of the ceramic work of one of the key figures in the history of Italian design. The tour starts from the works made by Ponti in the 1920s and 1930s, a period in which he held the role of artistic director of Manifattura Richard Ginori. In this phase, Ponti's creativity led to the birth of drawings, projects and collections destined to become iconic, which earned Richard-Ginori the victory of a Grand Prix at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925.

The work at Richard Ginori decisively influenced Ponti's vision of the relationship between industry and decorative art, and in fact the collaboration with the company did not stop even when, in 1933, the designer left the artistic direction of the Manufacture to Giovanni Gariboldi. In the second post-war period – while working intensively as an architect and designing some of the most representative buildings of Italian Modernism, such as the Pirelli Skyscraper in Milan – Ponti continued to collaborate with Richard Ginori and many other important entities, which attested his attention to the evolutions of the world of ceramics of which, since its foundation in 1973, Tagina has also been a protagonist. These collaborations led to the creation of projects that are characterised by their originality and that are still going strong today, capable of perfectly representing the Italian ceramic style.

Ponti also actively worked for the organisation of events aimed at consolidating and promoting the image of Made in Italy in the world: one above all the itinerant exhibition Italy at Work. Her Renaissance in Design Today, which took place in the United States between 1950 and 1951. In addition, Ponti also made a special commitment in the field of information, founding the magazines Domus and Stile, destined to become a reference point for all those working in the field of design and artistic craftsmanship. For these reasons, Ponti can rightly be considered "the inventor of Made in Italy", given his constant commitment to the promotion of Italian style, of which he himself helped to define the nature.

The exhibition organised at the MIC in Faenza, traces all the stages of Ponti's artistic and professional career in the field of ceramics and presents over two hundred works in ceramics, but also in glass and fabric, as well as countless documents, sketches and projects from prestigious public and private collections (including those of the Ginori Museum of Sesto Fiorentino, the Sforza Castle and the Poldi Pezzoli Museum). The exhibition is then completed by Francesca Molteni's film "Amare Gio Ponti", produced by Muse Factory of Projects in collaboration with Gio Ponti Archives, which traces the stages of the great designer's artistic career.

This exhibition was created with the contribution of the Richard Ginori Museum Archive Foundation, the Gio Ponti Archive and the Sesto Fiorentino Shower Factory, and Tagina is proud to have contributed to the completion of this ambitious project. This exhibition will allow all visitors to appreciate the peculiarities of Italian style in ceramic design and to admire unique works that have decisively influenced the history of the sector, testifying to the constant search for innovation, functionality and beauty that we too are committed to carrying out every day with our collections.
