Thin porcelain stoneware: an ally for renovation

Porcelain stoneware is an extraordinarily versatile material, able to perfectly reproduce the appearance and texture of many natural materials – from marble to wood to granite – and to adapt to any type of style and design choice, thanks to the wide availability of colours and finishes on the market.

The great versatility of porcelain stoneware, however, is not limited to aesthetic aspects: this material, thanks to its technical characteristics, allows to obtain extremely thin, small and large format tiles or slabs. This possibility paves the way for a series of particularly interesting applications, which make porcelain stoneware the ideal material to choose from, especially if you are planning a renovation.

What is thin porcelain stoneware

Porcelain stoneware tiles are normally less thick than tiles made of other natural materials. A marble floor, for example, rarely has a thickness of less than 18/20 millimetres (going below this measure is not technically impossible, but is rather unusual), while porcelain stoneware slabs are usually available in thicknesses ranging from 6 to 20 millimetres.

The success of this type of thin tiles is linked to their versatility and functionality, but also to the possibility of making particularly large slabs, up to 160x320 cm. The reduction in thickness, in fact, obviously involves a reduction in the weight of the tile, and therefore allows larger slabs to be obtained without this making their installation excessively difficult or risky. The use of large format slabs, in addition to achieving particular aesthetic effects, also reduces the amount of leakage, making floors made of thin porcelain stoneware even easier to clean and sanitise.

It should be noted that the reduction in thickness does not negatively affect the performance of porcelain stoneware tiles; infact, the latter, despite being much thinner than standard thickness porcelain stoneware tiles, retain the same characteristics in terms of resistance to scratching, abrasion, atmospheric agents and water.

Thin porcelain stoneware: the perfect choice for overlays

Thin porcelain stoneware tiles are a very functional choice in case you intend to pave a surface without removing the layer of tiles already present. This situation occurs frequently when a renovation is carried out: replacing the floors is in fact a very demanding intervention, and the possibility of doing so by gluing the new tiles directly onto those already present allows the renovation work to be substantially simplified.

The possibility of superimposing the thin stoneware tiles on the existing floor guarantees numerous advantages: on the one hand, it allows to reduce costs and working times, because the old flooring does not have to be removed and the laying of the new tiles is faster; on the other hand, it significantly limits the amount of waste and debris to be sent to landfill, with a consequent further reduction indisposal costs. This results – not a less important detail, in the case of a renovation – also in a significant reduction of dirt and dust produced during the work, which can therefore be completed in a short time, creating minimal discomfort.

For all these reasons, thin porcelain stoneware tiles are the perfect product for those who are carrying out renovations and are looking for an efficient, practical and performing solution that allows them to achieve an aesthetically impeccable result, without sacrificing comfort and convenience.
